The Rosewood tree is a splendid choice for warm weather areas. It is also known as the Tipu tree or Tipuana tipu. It is a fast growing, heat and drought tolerant, small to medium sized tree that grows as high as 20 to 30 feet, the perfect size for urban gardens. It is deciduous and the attractive foliage resembles the Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia), with the leaves divided into many rounded leaflets, but the similarities end there. Unlike Locust, Rosewood is thornless, with a lovely, spreading form that makes an excellent shade tree. And though it is deciduous, it is only briefly deciduous in late winter.
Lovely yellow flowers are abundant for many weeks from late spring to early summer and the petal-fall creates a beautiful golden carpet beneath the tree. And even though it is certainly a tropical tree, it does have a little cold tolerance, down to about 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Planted in full sun with an occasional deep watering, this fast growing tree will be shading the garden in quick time.

Rosewood prefers fertile, well-drained soil, full-sun and is drought resistant. It works as either a specimen or a street tree. It is well suited to the American Southwest and Gulf Coast where it is gaining a foothold and it’s even more popular in Australia. It is worth a try wherever winters are not too severe.
