For such a small tree Clerodendron trichotomum, more commonly known as Harlequin Glorybower, really has impact. Both flower and fruit are exceptionally beautiful and it has the added bonus of amazing fragrance. The dark green leaves are oval, five inches long and covered with a soft fuzz. In the full sun of late summer, the tree bears beautiful clusters of white, tubular flowers. The perfume is exotic and elusive. But there is even more than bloom and fragrance to this small tree since in late summer there are stunning fruits. The seed is a metallic sapphire framed by a magenta calyx. And flowers and fruits can be found on the plant at the same time.

Harlequin Glorybower is native to China and Japan. It prefers full sun and moist well drained soil. It exhibits little winter interest so is best used in a mixed border. It grows 15 to 20 feet tall and is often multi-trunked but could be grown as a single trunked specimen if staked. It is the perfect size for today’s smaller gardens and ideal for container, or patio which is especially useful in colder climes as this is a warm temperate to subtropical plant. In the United States it grows across the southern half of the country and will do well in the south and west of the UK. It is very successful in Australia and New Zealand.
